Precarious Perceptions

A recent incident involving another human being brought to light how precariously our perceptions can teeter on the edge of reality. Everyone perceives the world through their own lens which is influenced by our own unique menu of circumstances. A careful reminder…beware, what you perceive may not be someone else’s truth.

We have all done it, sized up a situation or another human being and brought our own perception to the table. If we are honest with ourselves we will admit we perceive with our ego minds. Our lessor selves, our inner child, our wounded souls have an insatiable need to placate our desired outcome. We want what we want when we want it. This often comes at the exclusion of another persons feelings and may even presume their authentic story.

Our higher selves who take a backseat to the ego mind gently nudge us to slow down, take a closer look, ask questions, listen. When we take the time with each other to allow heart to heart dialog we often find our perceptions to be way out in left field. The scruffy gentleman at Starbucks in the mismatched clothes may be Howard Hughes…Howard is gone now, but you get the point!

This is an oversimplified example, the stickiness comes to light in perceived situations when we desperately want to orchestrate our perfect outcome. The ego shouts “what about me! I’m right about this! I know I am! She, he, they are dead wrong.” This is where we get into trouble. We have presumed to know another persons story, we have not taken the time, nor had the compassion to investigate. To read and finish their book. We have only been focused on our own narrative. Reading, seeing, and truly respecting each others truth is a lot of work, it takes time, mindful compassion and consideration. We often don’t bother.

The result, when the truth comes out, and the smog of our egoic mind has dissipated we know we have created a damaged outcome. We feel bad and spend hours replaying the situation over and over in our minds. We rationalize and bargain with our souls. We have hurt another, and we have hurt our ourselves. The soulful wound we have dealt to our own heart festers and creates a scar which cannot be erased. Energetically sealed and floated out upon the the ripples of Karmic law; what goes around comes around. This creates a deeper and broader affect than the time it would have taken to accurately perceive through the eyes of another. To have read their true tale and listened with a clean heart.

Save yourself some sleepless nights and take the time to use your perceptive powers unclouded by selfish desires. Allow for human error and be compassionate with yourself and others when things aren’t always as you presume them to be. Listen and grow with your soul, then sleep easy upon a sea of painless dreams.

Peace, Greta
